FAQs

Retinal specialists are eye physicians and surgeons who focus on diseases in the back of the eye such as macular degeneration. A retina specialist is a medical doctor who has completed his or her training in eye surgery and disease. This includes a residency and fellowship specific to retinal disease.

Dr. Phillip Laird, Dr. Adam Laviña, Dr. David Levine and Dr. Paul Gallogly are all board certified and fellowship trained ophthalmologists. Because of their education and experience level as well as their involvement as clinical trial investigators, the doctors can offer their patients university-level retinal care in a community setting.

Today, people almost never go blind from macular degeneration. There are FDA approved drugs available to halt the progression of the disease and have been shown to actually improve vision for people afflicted with age related macular degeneration.

It is usually not necessary to cut the eye, as most diseases can be addressed without surgery. Occasionally outpatient surgery is required, but the tools used today are precise surgical instruments designed for accuracy and minimal pain.
