Dr. James H. Guildford

guildford_01James H. Guildford, M.D. is a board-certified retinal vitreous disease specialist who has practiced ophthalmology in the Greater West Palm Beach, Stuart and Port St. Lucie areas for more than 30 years. A Buffalo native, he attended college at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he received an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering and graduated as the class valedictorian with membership in Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States.

He then graduated with honors from Vanderbilt Medical School before transitioning into an ophthalmology residency program at the University of Alabama Eye Foundation Hospital where he served as chief resident during his last program year.

He completed his fellowship in cornea and external disease at the University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute followed by a fellowship in retina and vitreous disease at the prestigious Cullen Eye Institute at the Baylor College of Medicine. Before joining Retina Care Specialists, he had his own solo practice and served as Chief of Ophthalmology at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

Dr. Guildford has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and presented at national and international forums. He is currently one of the principal investigators in a research study designed to assist in the treatment of “dry” age-related macular degeneration.

He is an active member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists and a lifetime member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

When he’s not working, traveling, boating or scuba diving, he loves spending leisure time with his wife of 32 years and three children. His eldest daughter is completing her studies to become a Doctor of Optometry, his second daughter is an award-winning teacher and youngest son is in college studying business.
