What is a retina specialist?

Retinal specialists are eye physicians and surgeons who focus on diseases in the back of the eye such as macular degeneration. Dr. Michels, Dr. Laviña, Dr. Paul Gallogly and Dr. Laird are board certified and fellowship trained ophthalmologists. Today, people almost never go blind from macular degeneration. There are FDA approved drugs available to halt the progression of the disease, and there is a drug called Lucentis that has been shown to actually improve vision on people afflicted with age related macular degeneration.

Are you going to cut my eye?

It is usually not necessary to cut the eye, as most diseases can be addressed without surgery. Occasionally outpatient surgery is required, but the tools used today are precise surgical instruments designed for accuracy and minimal pain.
